Summary : A Neolithic causewayed or segmented ring ditch located south west of the Barrow Hills linear cemetery (SU 59 NW 8) was excavated in 1983-5. The ring ditch comprised four arcs of ditch, three forming a semicircle open to the southwest, and the fourth partly closing this south western side, but with wide causeways on either side. Finds included animal bones, two flint scrapers and a quantity of unretouched flakes. A single microlith was also found. A few potsherds include Beaker and Deverel-Rimbury material. A disturbed infant inhumation in the eastern terminal of one ditch segment is believed to be of Roman date. A pit just outside the ring ditch contained an unaccompanied cremation. A shallow pit just inside the ring ditch contained a quantity of charcoal which produced a date of 390-600 AD (calibrated), suggesting Early Saxon use of the site. |
More information : Cropmark remains of a Neolithic causewayed ring ditch seen at SU 5132 9808. The site is defined by four sections of ditch separated by causeways, forming a circular enclosure with a diameter of 10m. There is a larger gap in the north-western quadrant which may be an entrance.
This site lies at the south-western end of the Barrow Hills BA barrow cemetrey, and south-east of a Neolithic barrow (SU59NW 86) and causewayed enclosure (SU59NW 30).
These and the surounding features were mapped at 1:10,000 scale as part of the RCHME: Thames Valley NMP (TG.351.19.1). (1) |
