More information : Lynchets representing a field system, possibly of Medieval date, were mapped at 1:10,000 from APs by the Fyfield Down and Overton Down Mapping Project. The earthworks are located on an E facing slope and are fairly fragmentary. The field system lies within the area SU 12807260, SU 13407300, SU 14307220, SU 13107190, SU 12807260. (1-3)
Ridge and furrow was recorded between some of the lynchets, centred at SU 1370 7210. The linear earthwork described as SU 17 SW 90 may be part of this field system. (2)
Further lynchets are visible as earthworks on 2006 lidar. This includes a group of lynchets that curve around the steep slope of Totterdown (SU 1414 7189). These lynchets extend into the Fyffield Down field system (NMR 221626) suggesting that they might be earlier than Medieval. (4) |
