Clanfield Hospitallers Preceptory

Hob Uid: 1075298
Location :
Oxfordshire
West Oxfordshire
Clanfield
Grid Ref : SP2800002000
Summary : Preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers, mentioned in 1279 and united with Quenington before 1433. Extant in 1180 when a nunnery at Gosford was founded on land owned by the Preceptory, and sisters of the Order of St John of Jerusalem were transferred from Clanfield to Buckland.. Traditionally, the site has been associated with Friars Court (SP20SE12), and observations at 3-5 Friars Court have demonstrated that a 13th century chapel is incorporated in a row of three cottages.
More information : One sister of the order of St John of Jerusalem was transferred from a cell at Clanfield to Buckland circa 1180. A preceptory of Knight's Hospitallers mentioned in 1279 and in 1338 appears to have existed here also. It was united to Quenington before 1433. (1)
