CLANFIELD HOSPITALLERS PRECEPTORY

DESCRIPTION + /

Preceptory of the Knights Hospitallers, mentioned in 1279 and united with Quenington before 1433. Extant in 1180 when a nunnery at Gosford was founded on land owned by the Preceptory, and sisters of the Order of St John of Jerusalem were transferred from Clanfield to Buckland.. Traditionally, the site has been associated with Friars Court (SP20SE12), and observations at 3-5 Friars Court have demonstrated that a 13th century chapel is incorporated in a row of three cottages.
