Summary : Second World War Explosives Factory at Sellafield, established to produce TNT, production started in March 1943 and is believed to have ceased in 1945. The monument is also visible as upstanding structures and earthworks on air photographs mapped as part of the North West Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. Some elements remain visible on the latest 1995 Ordnance Survey vertical photography.
More information : NY 025 038. Soon after the outbreak of war in 1939 the Royal
Ordnance Factory organisation established an Explosives Factory at
Sellafield to manufacture TNT. The factory cost #2.5 million and
production started in March 1943. It is believed that production
ceased at the end of the war in 1945. In 1947 the site was taken
over to as part of the British nuclear weapons programme for the
construction of two air-cooled reactors. (1-1b)

The monument is also visible as upstanding structures and earthworks on air photographs mapped as part of the North West Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey, centred at NY 0260 0375. Some elements remain visible on the latest 1995 Ordnance Survey vertical photography.
