Summary : Part of a Roman cohort stone was found in the River Eden in the early 19th century. It commemorates the work of the fifth cohort of the Twentieth Legion. It is also listed as part of an altar.
More information : An inscribed Roman stone is situated in a wall at Beaumont, on the left as we ascend the village street. It commemorates the work of the fifth cohort of the Twentieth Legion. (1-2) The altar was fished out of the Eden, near Beaumont early in the 19th century. NY 3480 5924: At position noted. (3) Cohort stone described in Roman Inscriptions of Britain No. 2035. (4) The National Grid Reference for the site is: NY3480 5924 which reflects the stone's current location, not its findspot. (5)
