More information : There are traces of a ditch to the north of Newport Street (centred : 30138102), and on the south in Bridge Street (centred: 30068082), Clun. The eastern line of the defences could have been at Frog Street (centred: 30288096), the western being filled by the castle. There is documentary evidence that "a single murage grant" for the town walls was received in 1277. (1-3) A straight scarp running through the rear gardens of Newport Street, marks the change of slope between the north-facing slopes and the summit of the hill upon which old Clun is situated. The scarp turns southwards, clearly at the north-east corner at SO 30238110, less clearly at the north-west corner amongst buildings at SO 30038100 to fade out onto the less steep slopes of the east and west sides of the hill. It could, conceivably, represent the former course of the town wall but there is no real evidence and no trace of a ditch as suggested by Turner (1), either here or in Bridge or Ford streets. (4)
