More information : HUTTON-IN-THE-FOREST II
Medieval deer park and woodland (circa 200 ha) with C17 to C19 developments. C17 garden developments on all sides of the house (NY 43 NE 8), avenue outwards from north-east, square plots to north-west, formal terraces on south-west and south-east sides. Kip engraving of 1714 shows an elaborate scheme which was not fully executed. Plots to north-west enclosed by walls in 1730s to make kitchen gardens (circa 1.5ha), now adapted as an ornamental garden. A lake (the Middle Pond) created 200m beyond the terraces to the south-east; the terraces survived through the C18 and were probably restored by W S Gilpin in the 1830s. Two further ponds were created in the C19, one 300m to the east (possibly re-establishing an earlier pond), the other 600m south of the house. Late C19 clipped hedges and topiary work both in the kitchen garden and on line of south-east terrace. Woodland to south-west - The Grove contains ornamental trees from C19 and C20 planting. (1)
