Early C18 landscape garden (20ha) on exceptional wooded riverside site. The grounds run north-south on either side of Corby Castle (NY 45 SE 10), along and above the course of the River Eden. Principal landscaping for Thomas Howard from circa 1708 onwards with occasional earlier and later features. Earliest reference in 1653 to an orchard and `garden with a summer house therein'. C18 and C19 features include gate lodge, dovecote, cascade, temple and statues. Rectangular kitchen garden 1812-17. (1)
Pleasure grounds designed by Thomas Howard between 1709-39. The park is also 18th century in date. Additions to the pleasure grounds and park were made by Henry Howard in 1805 and Philip Howard during the mid 19th century. (2) |
