More information : (Centred: SO 38538710) ? Moat. (1) Earthwork, ditch on S & E only. Related to homestead moat, N falling steeply, W a damp hollow. (2) A small but strongly defensive earthwork has been constructed above a steep-sided bend in the terrace of the R Onny. The natural angle is almost a right angle, and a near square enclosure has been formed by the construction of a large bank and outer ditch on the other two sides, plus some scarping of the natural. The bank rises 1.8m above the enclosed area and 3.7m above the bottom of the 1.6m deep ditch. The enclosed area measures some 25.0m E-W by 20.0m transversely, and it is approached by a ramp inthe SW corner. Moat-like in plan, but really too strong. Nonetheless, it almost certainly represents a Md dwelling site. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Considered dubious but listed in a group of moated sites (4)
The defended site described by authorities 1-4 is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs. It appears as a mound or platform surrounded by a ditch on its southern side, and has been mapped by RCHME's Marches Uplands Mapping Project. (5) |
