More information : BELLE ISLE II*
Wooded island in lake Windermere (16ha) landscaped in C18 and C19. The gardens were begun circa 1773 before the house (SD 39 NE 16) was built, but their present form was established by Thomas White in the early 1780s, following the mid-C18 Brownian formula of a belt of trees, perimeter walk, and grassed sweep to the house, adapted to an island site. The trees are now in high maturity. (1)
Landscaping created by Thomas White for John Christian Curwen during the early 1780s. White's design replaced a 1770s design by Thomas English. (2) |
