More information : MULGRAVE CASTLE II*
Landscaped woods and grounds and pleasure grounds (circa 230ha) with additional woods and land south-west and north-east (circa 120ha). Present layout probably developed in late C18th and early C19th; Humphry Repton advised in 1792-93. Pleasure grounds to the north-east, south and west of house (NZ 81 SW 24). To the north-east a carefully planned vista to the sea and a terrace with a view of Whitby to the east. Modern ornamental gardens by Lanning Roper. To the south of house the woods are divided by a high ridge into two natural valleys. On the ridge are the ruins of the medieval Mulgrave Castle (NZ 81 SW 4). A tunnel conveys the southern drive through the ridge, over the bridge and up to he house. The tunnel drive and alterations to the ruins of the castle were planned by Repton. Walled garden. (1)
