Summary : A Roman predecessor to the Medieval Head Gate may have existed on this site.
More information : TL 99402499 Head Gate (R) (Site of) (NAT) (1) No definite remains of a Roman Head Gate have yet been proved. It would serve a road running diagonally on the on the line of Butt Road which has large Roman cemteries on both sides. The fact that the Balkerne Gate ceased to function in the 3rd century adds weight to this theory. (2-4)
