More information : (TL 99212470) Roma Pottery Kiln (R) (Site of) (1)
TL 99212470 A potter's kiln was found when the old windmill om the south side of Butt Road near the present Salisbury Hotel was pulled down in 1890. In that year the museum aquired a portion of a kiln and a fragment of mortarium referred to the Butt Road kiln, dated to the late 2nd century AD. Other kilns had previously been mentioned from here. Hull (4) also mentions a bone pin manufactory on this site but does not include it in Roman Colchester. (See TL 92 SE 19 for the Bronze Age chisel and palstave from here). (2-4) |
