Summary : A large Roman altar of sandstone dedicated to the Sulevian Mothers was found in excavating for a sewer in Balkerne Lane in 1881, in the town ditch. It may originally have come from the temple to the SW of the town (TL 92 SE 100).
More information : (TL 99222498) Roman altar found AD 1881 (NAT) (1) (TL 99222498) A large Roman altar of sandstone dedicated to the Sulevian Mothers was found in excavating for a sewer in Balkerne Lane, just outside the SW angle of the town wall. It is said it was found in the town ditch. Sited from description, now in Colchester Museum (3). (2-4) The altar may have come from the temple to the SW of the town (TL 92 SE 100). (5)
