Summary : In 1812 when excavating in a field of the Earl of Lonsdale on Stanwix Bank preparatory to building a bridge over the Eden, workmen found a capital and part of a pillar of Tuscan order, which was 15" in diameter and lying horizontally. An aqueduct was also discovered formed of large stones, laid with cement, and several pieces of hewn stone and large bricks. The base of a massive column with pedestal was dug up, about 5' below the surface, near the same place in 1815. In 1816 while widening and improving the road a very large quantity of human bones was discovered in a vault about 8' long and 4' in breadth. A fragment of Roman pottery was found at the time with SARRI inscribed on the rim. The pillar and capital are in the grounds of Tullie House Museum. |
