More information : A sculptured trough or coffin 54 inches long, carved on the front only with a vine pattern very similar to that on the Bow Stone (NY 35 NW 19) is described as either poor Anglian work of the 8th century, or of the Anglian revival of the 11th and early 12th century. (1) Although Ferguson had listed it as a Roman Stone Coffin. (2)
The item had been sent to Tullie House c 1883-4 by J B Watson, having been in use previously as a trough for mixing mortar or feeding stuff at the farm of William Little, on land which had formerly belonged to the Robinsons of Green Lane, Dalston. Collingwoood suggests that this, and the Bow Stone came originally from some probably ecclesiastical building, possibly at Kirksteads. (NY 35 NE 8). (1-2)
There is no description of this stone in the Corpus. (3) |
