Thorpe

Hob Uid: 1057912
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Thorpe in the Fallows
Grid Ref : SK9125080720
Summary : The earthwork remains of the medieval village of Thorpe, a small settlement established before the late 11th century. The village of Thorpe is linear in form, stretching along a slight ridge in low-lying land on the eastern side of the Trent Valley. The settlement remains are visible as a series of raised rectangular enclosures, lying adjacent to each other on an east-west alignment and separated by shallow drainage ditches running north-south. Most of these enclosures represent house plots in which the buried remains of medieval dwellings are located. A group of enclosures in the western part of the monument is bounded on the east and north by more substantial water-control features, including broad ditches and linear ponds up to 1 metre deep; further ponds are situated on the south side of these enclosures adjacent to the present road. This group of remains may represent a single medieval land holding including four or five house plots. Further remains include some traces of ridge and furrow cultivation. Scheduled.
More information : The deserted village of Thorpe (SK 912 807) has been the subject of
a detailed ground survey and historical research. For a full
description see reference 1. During the field survey substantial
amounts of Roman and Medieval pottery were found. (1)

The Medieval settlement referred to by authority 1 was seen as
earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The
remains of tofts and crofts are visible to the north and south of
the main road through the present village of Thorpe in the Fallows.
They are defined by conjoined, rectilinear, ditched enclosures
extending east-west for 550m, centred at SK 9125 8072, SK 9107 8062
and SK 9145 8062. The crofts and tofts to the south of the road
and east of Clarendon House have been ploughed flat and are visible
as cropmarks. Possible trackways extend along the backs of the
crofts. Various ponds and/or quarries within the tofts and crofts
could be grubbed out building sites and/or later cattle ponds. A
World War II searchlight battery is visible within the settlement to
the south of the road (see SK 98 SW 31). (Morph No. LI.619.1.1-8)
