Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Holton cum Beckering
Grid Ref : TF1184081230
Summary : Probable Medieval settlement (crofts and ridge and furrow) seen as cropmarks and earthworks. Possible moat seen as cropmarks.
More information : The fragmentary remains of Medieval settlement were seen as
cropmarks and earthworks, around the present village of Hotlon cum
Beckering, and mapped from poor quality air photographs. The
remains of crofts are visible to the north of the present village
as partially visible ditched conjoined enclosures centred at TF
1145 8130 and TF 1162 8148. More fragments of possible crofts are
visible south of Laurels Farm centred at TF 1160 8110. To the
south east of Holton Hall are the possible remains of a moat
centred at TF 1184 8123. A block of ridge and furrow survives as
earthworks to the west of the village centred at TF 1138 8102.
(Morph No. LI.6.2.1-3)

This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database.
(1)

The moat feature was not visited, but no trace if the long channel
leading to it from the north was seen from a brief roadside
inspection. None of the other features recorded by authority 1
survive as earthworks with the exception of the ridge and furrow at
TF 1138 8102. (2)
