Summary : Earthworks of former priory [SK 80 NW 4] and later formal garden to Brook House [SK 80 NW 24].
More information : (Centred at SK 8457 0607) It is uncertain whether the numerous banks and terraces near Brooke Priory (see also SK 80 NW 4 & 24) are medieval, or, as local tradition has it, the work of the Parliamentary forces (1)

Adjoining the foundations of Brooke Priory are extensive quadrangular terraces, generally 8ft in height, with rampart 4ft 6ins high and a counterscarp of 6ft. At each of the angles, by the road, is a conical mound 16ft high. (2)

The earthworks described include one well-defined fishpond and at least two others, the whole system being fed by a a stream running north-south through the centre of the earthworks which was dammed by a pond-bay to the south. The possible Parliamentary associations were not established during field investigation. Surveyed at 25". (3).

Local enquiry and research revealed no knowlegde or tradition of Civil War activity hereabouts.
The regular plan and strength of the major earthworks suggest them to be later in construction than the fishponds, possibly being ornamental gardening in association with the original Brooke House (see SK 80 NW 24). (4)

No change. (5)
