Summary : Overall parent record for the Roman frontier defences running along the Cumberland coast from Bowness Roman fort, the W terminal of Hadrian's Wall, south west to a point SW of Maryport Roman fort, and possibly as far as St. Bees Head. |
More information : The Roman frontier defences along the Cumberland Coast, which form a westward extension to Hadrian's Wall, have been examined in the course of the RCHME: Cumberland Coast Project. The pattern of milefortlets with two intervening towers mirrors that of the milecastles and turrets of Hadrian's Wall, and has been identified as far S as NY 0234, just S of Maryport, though most of these elements have been destroyed by the plough or building activities. It is suggested that the pattern may have continued to the SW as far as St Bees Head (NX 9414), but no trace was found on the ground. More recently evidence for a ditch/palisade system connecting the milefortlets and towers has been discovered from APs; this has been verified by excavations which are continuing. (1) |
