More information : NY 382272 (1) A Roman fort, discovered by the RCHM in 1973 (2), of circa 3 acres (1), measuring 392 ft E-W by 412ft, with a rampart, nearly 3ft high and spread to a width of 27ft (3). It has four plain entrances (2) and is reduced in size by a bank and ditch running N-S through the centre (1), suggesting an annexe. An emergency excavation across the W rampart by the DOE in 1973 owing to proposed road widening revealed front and rear post-holes with the stump of the front post in situ, indicating a timbered framework and parapet for the turf construction of a permanent fort (2). (1-3)
NY 382273. Small Roman fort 540m north west of Troutbeck Station, scheduled. (4)
Troutbeck Roman fort and annexe, possibly dated to the late 1st/early 2nd century. The lack of any evidence for a vicus suggests that occupation was of short duration. (5)
The fort and annexe were transcribed as part of the Skiddaw NMP project, based on the RCHME field survey plan. (6-7) |
