Tumulus on Great Mell Fell consisting of a low flat mound, circa 22ft in diameter and about 2 ft high, incorporating a retaining kerb of stones. On top is a modern cairn which marks on OS trig point. The mound is surrounded by a ditch 6 or 7 ins deep and circa 3 ft wide. (2)
The remains of a possible disc barrow. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

NY 39672538 Bowl barrow on Great Mell Fell. A circular mound of earth and stone 8.5m in diameter and 0.8m high. Surrounding the barrow there is a shallow ditch measuring up to 2.5m wide and 0.2m deep that is separated from the mound by a berm approximately 5m wide. A rare example in Cumbria of a bowl barrow where the mound is separated from the ditch by a berm; scheduled. (5)
The barrow was visible on vertical air photographs, so only part of the outer ditch was discernable. (6) |
