Monument Number 1038702

Hob Uid: 1038702
Location :
Nottinghamshire
Rushcliffe
Newton, East Bridgford
Grid Ref : SK6840043500
Summary : Alleged Roman road from Margidunum to the Trent, probably on line of a prehistoric route. No trace beyond the Trent but possibly associated witth RRX 14(LINEAR 332).
More information : (Name centred SK 6925 4240) Bridgeford Street (NAT) (1)

Near the southern side of Margidunum (SK 74 SW 5) a bridle path leaves the Foss Way at right angles in a northerly direction, and after crossing the village lane its course can be traced in the same direction through private grounds as far as the steep bluff overlooking the river.
It is known as Newton or Bridgeford Street. (2)

Bridgeford Street was an ancient track to the ferry at Gunthorpe (SK 64 SE 21) and an ancient road to Oxton and Ollerton. (3)

An ancient track, forming the SW boundary of East Bridgford parish is described on a map of 1612 as `the Highway between Gunthrop ferry and Bingham.... called the Street way'.
Part is now a road and its continuation down the hillside to the Trent can be seen as a deep hollow, parts of which have been converted into ponds. A raised bank marks its course across the level of the Holme to reach the ford.
It is suggested that it was a Roman metalled road from Margidunum to the ford on the line of an earlier British track which continued over the Foss Way in a south-easterly direction towards Woolsthorpe. (4)

Excavation of Margidunum revealed that the Via Principalis ran through a western gate continued as Bridgeford Street to the Trent and in the direction of Chesterfield. (5)

A small spur is shown as extending from the Foss Way at Margidunum to the Trent. It is not mentioned in the text. (6)

Perambulation of possible extensions of this road proved negative. The suggestion of a road to Chesterfield should be treated with reserve. (7)

No evidence found in the recording of Derbyshire. (8)
