More information : The Grantham Canal was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1793 and opened for traffic in 1799. It extended from the River Witham at Grantham to the River Trent at Nottingham, a distance of 33 miles with a fall of 140 feet. In 1846 it was acquired by the Ambergate, Nottingham and Grantham Railway and was abandoned in 1929. (1-5)
South-westwards from SK 908 355, the Grantham Canal, opened 1797 and abandoned in 1936, has been mostly filled in. (6)
Condition reported by a PastScape user in Februuary 2011. Only a short section beyond the A1 at Grantham has been filled in, but most of the rest of the course of the canal is water filled, with the exception of a central section which is dry but not filled-in. (7,8)
The website of the Grantham Canal Society makes it clear that elements of the canal are still navigable. The website includes a chronology of the canal and a gallery of historic images. (9)
