(TF 015 075). A section of Ermine Street was examined in 1956 by C Green in the fields just to the north of Stamford, prior to work on a new school. The area is shown on air photographs and `small side ditches' are visible. The base of the road was a layer of limestone rubble surviving to a width of 21 feet and a foot thick in the middle. A compact mass of `lime-cement' lay on top, reinforced in places with lines of flagstones. Upon this lay the road surface, some 12 feet wide with remains of a layer of small limestone pebbles or chippings in the south western half. There were clear signs of patching and repair in places. Some later disturbance had removed the north east ditch and cut into the material of the agger on that side. (4)

Ermine Street survives as an earthwork between TF 0054 0837 and
TF 0097 0798.

TF 0054 0837 - TF 0062 0830. Badly disturbed by robbing and hedge ditch.

TF 0073 0822 - TF 0076 0818. Agger up to 1.5m high. Fairly well preserved.

TF 0079 0816 - TF 0091 0805. Agger badly disturbed by removal of material as make up for the Old Great North Road.

TF 0093 0803 TF 0097 0798. Agger in fair condition. up to 1.0m high.

Surveyed at 1250 Scale. (5)

TF 0100 0800. Ermine Street, section S of Quarry Farm. Scheduled.(6)

Two sections of the Roman road have been mapped from good quality air
photographs.

The sections refered to by authorities 2-5 as extending from
TF 009 080 to TF 010 079 has been more accurately located at
TF 0090 0803 to TF 0167 0734. This section was visible on early
photography as a raised bank, stretching for about 1100m. The small
side ditches refered to by authority 4 were visible flanking the
agger for about 240m along the southernmost section of the road
centred at TF 0155 0745. The road has been built over with housing
from TF 0090 0803 to TF 0107 0791. The scheduled section is all that
appears visible extant on the air photographs. The road then appears
to run northwards into a wood where it is not possible to tell if it
survives upstanding. This is the section refered to by authority 5 as badly disturbed by robbing and hedge ditch from TF 0054 0837 to
TF 0062 0830. (Morph No. LI.792.1.1)
