More information : Ermine Street. RR 2c. Chesterton (Durobrivae) - Lincoln. Ermine Street was perhaps the most important road in Britain, designed to give direct communication from London to the main Roman military centres at Lincoln and York, and may have been designed and laid out at a very early stage in the occupation. It is unlikely that the choice of route was influenced by pre-Roman trackways and the alignments were therefore chosen to give the most suitable and direct course almost due north of London. The alignment passes through The Roman town of Durobrivae (TL 19 NW 62) from London (see RR 2a and 2b) and continues on a series of long straight alignments through the settlements at Great Casterton (TF 00 NW 28) and Ancaster (SK 94 SE 10) to the the centre of the Roman Colonia of Lincoln (SK 97 SE 7). The road is visible in parts as an agger and is partly followed by hedgerows, cropmarks and modern roads.
