Summary : The line of the Roman road running from Brougham to Carlisle. It is largely followed by a modern road to Carlisle. Little trace of the road remains but it is visible on occasions as possible hedgerows. |
More information : RR 7e Roman Road. Brougham - Carlisle. The northern main road continued upon the same alignment (as RR 7d) from the east side of the Brougham Roman fort (NY 52 NW 6), which after crossing the River Eamont went through the fields a little east of the present road, where it has been traced. It rises to higher ground through a depression which can just be made out and then the alignment continues straight through the eastern outskirts of Penrith, now covered by houses and a cemetery. Beyond this a hedgerow seems to mark it for a short distance , but otherwise there is no trace through the fields. The line joins the main road north of Penrith on top of the hill, and here a slight turn to the north was made. The alignment then rigidly follows the present main road to Carlisle, changing direction very slightly at several points.
A branch road (RR 741 - LINEAR 306) ran south-west from Voreda Roman fort (NY 43 NE 2) which is on the route. The Antonine Itineraries II and V include this road as part of the routes from Carlisle to Catterick via RR 82 (LINEAR 301) and the distance from Brougham to Carlisle is in reasonably good agreement with the actual mileage.
