Summary : Roman road running from Drumburgh to Kirkbride. This road has been traced in a south west direction from the Wall fort of Drumburgh (NY 25 NE 8) and is visible as a cropmark in places. It possibly extended to Old Carlisle Roman fort (NY 24 NE 1). |
More information : RR 869 Roman Road. Drumburgh - Kirkbride. A road has ben traced in a south-westerly direction from the Wall fort at Drumburgh (NY 25 NE 8). It is represented at first by a lane along the north side of the railway, and then is marked by a band of gravel across fields, now spread by ploughing to a width of some 60 feet. It shows as a white streak across the dark soil in suitable conditions. Where it crosses the moss the course is marked by a line of whin bushes in place of heather. It is lost on reaching the River Wampool but its direction points to Kirkbride (see Roman fort - NY 25 NW 1). It might have turned south at Kirkbride by the straight road to Oulton and Old Carlisle Roman fort (NY 24 NE1) (1)
