More information : (TF 130074 derived from OS 1:10000) The multi-period site at Maxey was discovered by Dr. J.K.St. Joseph from aerial photography (see TF 10 NW 1 for an outline of the main features). In 1979-81 excavations at Maxey revealed Middle and Late Iron age enclosure ditches within West Field with associated finds of coarse, shell-gritted pottery. Features include:
Shallow linear ditches marking a rectilinear enclosure of the Middle Iron Age and a possible droveway.
Linear ditches defining fields, a small sub-square enclosure and the eaves-drip gulley of a round house of the later Iron age. A clay domed oven was excavated. (2) |
