Monument Number 1030950

Hob Uid: 1030950
Location :
City of Peterborough
Maxey
Grid Ref : TF1280007700
Summary : Cropmark of a Late Iron Age or Roman rectangular enclosure.
More information : (TF 128077 derived from OS 1:10000) The multi-period site at
Maxey was discovered by Dr. J.K.St. Joseph from aerial
photography (see TF 10 NW 1 for an outline of the main features).
Cropmarks at Maxey were plotted in the 1956 RCHME survey of
archaeological sites on river gravels. (1)

Aerial photographs show a rectangular ditched enclosure partially
underlying modern farm buildings (at TF 127076) and two parallel
ditches run southwards. These features were thought by Simpson
to be part of the system of linear features to the north (SEE TF
10 NW 52) which have been dated by excavation to the Late Iron
Age / Roman period.

Gravel quarrying took place before this site could be
excavated.(2)
