Summary : Bronze Age ring ditches at Maxey probably representing Bronze Age round barrows. A linear feature visible on aerial photographs may be contemporary with this ring ditch. |
More information : (TF 125074 derived from OS 1:10000) The multi-period site at Maxey was discovered by Dr. J.K.St. Joseph from aerial photography (see TF 10 NW 1 for an outline of the main features). Circular cropmarks at Maxey were plotted in the 1956 RCHME survey of archaeological sites on river gravels. (1)
In early 1965 topsoil was stripped from the northern half of the field centred on TF 126075 in preparation for gravel quarrying. The Welland Valley Research Committee undertook selective excavations in advance of gravel extraction. Aerial photographs showed ring ditches lying in the south west corner of the field. The largest of these (RCHME Site 68) is about 51.8m diameter and may mark the limits of a barrow of early or middle Bronze Age date. The centre of the ring ditch had been disturbed by the construction of an enclosure in the Iron Age (see TF 10 NW 61).
A short arc of the ring ditch lay within the area cleared. The ditch was not excavated but the surface indications lead Simpson to suggest the it was earlier than the ditch of the Iron Age enclosure. The ditch measured about 1.52m in width.
A linear ditch running in a south-easterly direction from this ring ditch may be contemporary. In another field this feature runs up to and beyond a hengiform monument (see TF 10 NW 64). The ditch seemed to have been originally narrow and was later widened by digging short lengths of wider ditch to the north. (2)
