Summary : Roman road running from Malton to Lutton made of a concrete-like mass visible as an earthwork and in parish boundaries on the course of its route.
More information : RR 812 Roman Road. Malton - Lutton (9 miles) Very clear traces of a Roman road were found in Norton and the road was subsequently traced due east into the fields for about one mile, but has since been destroyed by ploughing. In Norton the road was a hard concrete-like mass, 15 inches thick, possibly because this was near the ford, but even where found further east it was formed of broken stone set in cement and laid upon a boulder foundation. Its direction makes it probable that it continued to the north of Settrington, connecting with the long ridgeway called Settrington High Street which continues as a very straight and direct road for five miles to West Lutton, accompanied for most of the way by parish boundaries. It is distinctly raised, by 1-2 feet, although quite a minor route. (1) See Linear Archive File for further details. (2)
