A probable Roman road is visible as cropmarks on air photographs running between SE 792 718 and SE 793 720. It is defined by two parallel ditches leading from the north-east gate of the fort (UID 59794) and traceable as far as the current access road to the cricket ground. The more southerly section is also defined by a broad negative cropmark, indicating the presence of a metalled surface. This appears to deviate slightly from the course of the road ditches just south of a band of trees. While this may suggest the presence of a minor side road or track, it could also be evidence of reuse of the road in the post-Roman period. Buildings interpreted as the remains of the vicus are aligned on the road but are recorded separately (UID 1575968). (2-3) |
