Summary : The probable site of a Roman cemetery in Ox-Close, circa 200 metres south-east of Chesters fort, based on antiquarian records of the discovery of tombstones. Surveys have not determined whether this area has been ploughed, and therefore damaged. If the Roman road from the south gate of the fort formed the Wesern boundary of the cemetery, it is likely to be extensive. |
More information : (Previously recorded by the Ordnance Survey as NY 97 SW 5.2)
Two cemeteries at Chesters can be located with some exactness. The larger and doubtless more important one lined the south-westward road, 200 yds or more from the south gate of the fort in a field called the Ox-close. Bruce (1a) defines the position of this cemetery as 'where the river bends rapidly to the east, and where the sunk fence defining the park of Chesters joins the river's bank' (NY 911699). Early antiquaries record the discovery of Roman tombstones, some of them inscribed, from this area. (1-2)
