Summary : The site of a lime kiln excavated in 1909 on the steep north-east scarp opposite the bath house at Housesteads Roman Fort. Opening onto the slope was the splayed mouth of a flue, 4.5 metres long, leading upwards into an oval kiln-chamber, 3 metres across and up to eight courses high, cut into the rock. It was not closely dateable; Roman pottery of the late 3rd-early 4th centuries was found overlying and within it. There are no visible remains.
More information : NY 7925 6885. The kiln was excavated in 1909 on the steep NE scarp opposite the bath house. Opening onto the slope was the splayed mouth of a flue, 4.5m long, leading upwards into an oval kiln-chamber, 3m across and up to eight courses high, cut into the rock. It was not closely dateable; Roman pottery of the late 3rd-early 4th centuries was found overlying it and within. The kiln was back-filled to preserve it (1a). Nothing visible; full report forthcoming. (1)
