More information : Evaluation trenching in advance of road development revealed a 'floor' of worn flint pebbles (later seen to be a circular feature 3m in dia.) with a covering of midden refuse including mid-Iron Age pot sherds. In the southern part of the same trench two pits 0.5m in dia. and 20 and 60cm deep respectively were found to contain Belgic and Roman pot sherds and daub. Two more bowl shaped back filled pits were found (with fragments of early Iron Age, Belgic and Roman pottery) one of which was cut by a wall foundation of early Roman date. Most of the Roman and later horizons in this area removed by ploughing. (1) |
