Summary : Roman road; Horsley describes the road as running south of "both walls", i.e. south of the Vallum. Shaw excavated what he considered to be the road extending south-east from the east abutment across the floodplain to this farm trace, but the evidence seems slight. Bidwell and Holbrook suggest that the modern farm track descending the river cliff south-west from Willowford Farm may be on line of the Roman road, no trace was found during their excavations of the bridge abutments. The course of the road was not ascertained; the river cliff is affected by soil creep and spring sapping. |
