More information : Consolidated, about 2.2m wide with a core up to 1.7m high. The facing stones are up to about 1.0m (6 courses) high. (1)
A length of Hadrian's Wall known as Winshields Wall, situated along the Winshields Crags; the highest point on the Wall with far-reaching views of the surrounding area. The monument includes 335 metres of upstanding wall, 124 metres of which have been consolidated. Elsewhere the wall survives as a low stony covered mound with a fieldwall overlying its course. The steep crags in the area render a defensive ditch superfluous and so the wall ditch was only constructed in the gaps between the crags. (2,4,5)
The section of the Wall at Winshields is depicted on the English Heritage 1:25,000 scale map published in 2010. (6)
Basic directions for visitors: Winshields Wall is situated to the west of Steel Rigg car park, on a minor road off the B6318. (7) |
