More information : ST 5922 7313: Site of motte, probably over 45m diameter with surrounding ditch. It was demolished before 1147 and the ditch filled in. The existence of a stone-built tower on the motte is suggested by mortared stone found in the ditch-fill. The whole extent of the motte ditch can now be planned, 83m N-S by 79 m E-W externally, slightly oval. (1-4)
Further excavations in 1989 confirmed the presence of the motte and its ditch. The bailey ditch was also recorded. It is tentatively suggested from the pottery evidence that the ditch was backfilled deliberately by 1120. (5) |
