Military Way

Hob Uid: 1008818
Location :
Northumberland
Corbridge
Grid Ref : NY9799068790
Summary : Some 400m west of Dere Street and 12m north of the north mound of the Vallum the Roman road can still be identified on the ground closing gradually towards the north mound (NY 9868/11 and /13). It is significant that where the north mound has survived reasonably intact west of Portgate to Chesters, and it must be emphasised that much of it is badly mutilated, crossings can only be seen in the sector east of milecastle 23. No definite trace; course probably to north of Vallum. A superficially agger-like feature emerges from the east end of Stanley Plantation to the north of and parallel to the north mound; it is 6.5m wide and the furrow defining its south edge is 6.5m north of the north mound; probably ridge-and-furrow.
More information : Horsley was able to trace the Military Way coming from Portgate as far west as the point near the `castellum' by St Oswald, which from his description is milecastle 25. At Portgate the road passes near `Hadrian's north agger' (Vallum north mound) `then coincides with it' (1a).
