Military Way |
Hob Uid: 1008767 | |
Location : Northumberland Wall
|
Grid Ref : NY9399069400 |
Summary : Horsley was able to trace the Military Way, coinciding with the north mound of the Vallum (except at the milecastles), coming east of Portgate as far west as the point near the `castellum' by St Oswald, which from his description is milecastle 25, but from here it was `lost in the village and inclosures from St Oswald to Walwick Chesters' (Chesters Fort). The north mound survives in pristine condition in only two short sections NY 9669/10 and NY 9369/16, the latter within Horsley's `village and inclosures'. In both cases the size and shape are commensurate with the mound having been adapted to accommodate the Military Way. In this sector (NY 9369/15), the north mound and Roman road are completely ploughed out. |
