Tower 1A

Hob Uid: 1007898
Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Bowness
Grid Ref : NY2040061650
Summary : Conjectural site of a Roman tower, no visible remains, (part of the Roman frontier defences).
More information : NY 2042 6165: there is a distinct green mound at the measured position, removed with the shingle for road building in the 1960's. Site not tested (1a). The former position of the `green mound' (see authority 1a) was pointed out on the ground by Bellhouse at NY 2040 6165 (1b) during the RCHME Cumberland Coast Project. He stated that at least 1m depth of shingle had been taken away, and that the mound was never tested in any way by him prior to its destruction. There is now no trace of a tower on the ground, and therefore its authenticity as the site of a tower must remain in question. (1)
