More information : An air photographic interpretation by the RCHME as part of the Newton Kyme Project, revealed a cropmark field system, consisting of five almost parallel linear ditches, approximately 75m apart, trending east-west. The date of this field system is uncertain, possibly Iron Age or Roman. The narrow ditches can be seen as a cropmark within the cropmark of the Late Neolithic/ Early Bronze Age henge ditch (SE 44 NE 21), suggesting they post-date the henge. The ditches seem to terminate on the road/droveway of the 'vicus' (SE 44 NE 32) and may be contemporary with this Roman settlement. The northern most ditch (SE 4580 4516) deviates around the Roman tomb (SE 44 NE 24), suggesting it post-dates it. However the broader character of this ditch compared to the others, suggests it may have continued in use and been re-established in the Medieval period. The field system is located within the following grid references: SE 4572 4515 SE 4596 4516 SE 4610 4500 SE 4596 4491 SE 4582 4487 (1) |
