More information : An air photographic interpretation by the RCHME as part of the Newton Kyme Project, revealed an incomplete rectilinear ditched enclosure (SE 4558 4542, SE 4571 4507 SE 4553 4499) , with a rounded south-east corner at SE 4571 4507, but with no discernible entrances, which is probably a Roman camp. The dimensions of this incomplete enclosure (200m by 380m), suggest a substantial sized camp, greater than 7.5 hectares. The camp is overlain by the Roman fort (SE 44 NE 6) and the 'vicus' (SE 44 NE 32) which suggests it predates them. (1) |
