Monument Number 10033

Hob Uid: 10033
Location :
Cumbria
Allerdale
Bowness
Grid Ref : NY2644059910
Summary : Medieval ditch survives as an earthwork, enclosing a platform and possibly the remans of a garden or orchard.
More information : (NY 2644 5991) The ditch which cuts obliquely across the Roman earthworks at Drumburgh is the boundary of a Medieval Grange which seems to have been part of Drumburgh Castle (NY 25 NE 1). It is described as part of the castle in 1829 (1a). McIntire mentions also a ditch to the west and south of Drumburgh Castle (see NY 25 NE 1). (1-3)

The remains of the ditch are as described, but no traces are visible to the west and south of Drumburgh Castle. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

As depicted by authority (4), overgrown. (5)

Neither authority 1a or 2 mentions a grange; 1a says that the area of the fort was converted into a garden and orchard to Drumburgh Castle. (6)

The north and west arm of a ditch (corner centred at NY 2644 5992) surrounding a platform is visible as earthworks on air photographs. There is no further evidence from the air photographs as to the function of the ditch and enclosed platform.
