Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1002090

Hob Uid: 1002090
Location :
Wiltshire
Avebury
Grid Ref : SU0891071170
Summary : Probable Bronze Age round barrow, visible as a cropmark, 200 metres south east of Windmill Hill causewayed enclosure. It is possibly Grinsell's Avebury 48b. Documentary sources for barrows in the vicinity of Windmill Hill were examined as part of the RCHME Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic project. See the archive report for full details. The barrow is no longer extant as an earthwork, though examination of air photographs dating back to 1924 depict a badly damaged central mound surrounded by a ditch and bank. Overall diameter for the monument is circa 45 metres.
More information : [NB this record formerly comprised part of SU 07 SE 15, along with 3 other barrows, Grinsell's Avebury 46, 46a and 46b. Each has now been recorded individually (SU 07 SE 50, 51 & 15 respectively) in order to provide a clear account and description of each. Refer to OS record card SU 07 SE 15 for original format and details].

'D': OS aerial photographs show the cropmark of a barrow at
SU 0891 7116 but there is nothing visible on the ground. (1-2)

Documentary sources for barrows in the vicinity of Windmill Hill causewayed enclosure were examined as part of the RCHME project on Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic. Grinsell (3a) described a cropmark, on an aerial photograph (3b), as "probably a ploughed out barrow", at SU 08937119, and designated Avebury 48b. See archive report for a full discussion of the barrows around Windmill Hill. (3)

The cropmark of a Bronze Age round barrow described by the previous authorities was mapped from aerial photographs. The barrow consists of a badly damaged central mound surrounded by a ditch and a bank. The majority of photography only shows the ditch (3b, 4-6), but two show the other features as well (1, 7). Overall the barrow measures roughly 45m in diameter and the centre of the barrow is more accurately centred at SU 0891 7117.
