Summary : Remains of a World War II Heavy Anti aircraft gunsite sited on Sandpit Hill north of Benfleet Creek and Hadleigh Marsh along the Thames estuary. Remains include four 5.25 inch gun emplacements and the associated remains of nissen huts. To the west lies a post war combined Operations Room and Generator Block. 500 metres to the south are 4 octagonal 4.5 inch gun emplacements set in a semi circle each having 5 ammunition recesses built into the surrounding walls and flanked by an integral bomb proof shelter. A second on site magazine located partly below ground level is located to the west of this. Further remains include a Command Post, the Gun Store and a water tower. Scheduled.
More information : Remains of a World War II Heavy Anti aircraft gunsite which is sited on Sandpit Hill north of Benfleet Creek and Hadleigh Marsh along the Thames estuary. There are four 5.25 inch gun emplacements within a 3 level structure located in a square formation surviving mainly below ground and the associated remains of nissen huts. To the west of the emplacements lies a post war combined Operations Room and Generator Block built from heavy concrete and steel framed shuttered windows. 500 metres to the south are 4 octagonal 4.5 inch gun emplacements set in a semi circle facing east. Each has 5 ammunition recesses built into the surrounding walls and flanked by an integral bomb proof shelter. The command post is one of a number of buildings and structures within the semi circular area. A second on site magazine located partly below ground level is located to the west of this. Further remains include the Gun Store and a water tower. Scheduled. (1)

The battery was manned by 11 Battery of the 2nd Royal Artillery Regiment in 1942 and by 625 Battery of the 184th (MIxed) Royal Artillery Regiment in 1943. Retained as a Nucleus Force Headquarters Battery in 1946. (2)
