In 1991 the Carlisle Archaeological Unit initiated a detailed survey of the archaeology of the parishes of Arthuret and kirkandrews named the Arthuret Project. They identified four areas where they considered measured surveys would be desirable as aids to research and management. Of the RCHME Newcastle undertook the planning of the earthwork castle of Liddel Strength. This was done at 1:500 scale using a Wild T1000 theodolite with DI1000 EDM head for the supply of control, and a Wild RK1 self-reducing alidade and plane table for the survey of archaeological and natural detail. The original plan of the earthwork in its topographical setting, covering some 4 hectares, and the associated field report are available for consultation in the NMR archive.
