Excavations within the fourth tower and the Great Ditch of the outer
bailey, the bridge south of the SW gatehouse, and the Inner Ward Gateway.
Investigations in 1995 involved the removal of 3 areas of tumbled stonework
from the Inner Ward gateway (classified by the National Trust as a watching
brief).

7 test pits within Keep to test condition of cross walls/depth of ashlar
facing. Excavation on larger scale (see UID 1076338), instigated on basis
of findings.

1996 Excavation CORFE CASTLE

Excavations revealed the two cross walls in the south half of the Keep.
Only the top metre of rubble was removed, so finds were largely 19th and
20th century, although some Civil War objects were also found.

uncover the plan of the length of wall linking the west end of the Long
Chamber to the Gloriette stair passage to the north.

Fragments of wall painting were found during repair and conservation of castle stonework. A condition survey was carried out.
