A level 3, 1:2500 scale, photogrammetric survey was carried out by the Aerial Survey section of RCHME in the vicinity of a possible causewayed enclosure at Stapleford, Camdridgeshire (TL 4893 5306). The survey was undertaken as part of the Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project which was set up by the Cambridge field office of RCHME. The main objective of the survey was to produce an accurate 1:2500 scale plan of the plough-levelled archaeological features in the vicinity of this feature.
The enclosure comproses of two interrupted ditches and two banks forming the northern half of a large curvilinear enclosure, which would have enclosed approximately 3.85 hectares. The visible section lies to the north of Little Trees Hill and when complete, the enclosure would have encircled the entire knoll.
The enclosure is visible as soilmarks on vertical and oblique photographs held by the RCHME and CUCAP. The interrupted nature of the ditches suggests that it may a Neolithic causewayed enclosure. To the north-east of the enclosure at TL 4894 5316, is a sub-square, ditched enclosure. It is 8m across and appears to surround a plough-levelled chalk mound.
The metrical accuracy of the finished plot was +/- 3.0m, this was achieved using the Aerial 4.2 software published by the University of Bradford. Field control was taken from current edition OS 1:2500 scale plans. An accompanying report detailing photographs used, site location, topography, site history and a full description of the features plotted was produced as well as an interim inked plan. The archive associated with this project is held by RCHME (Collection Record 1072953).
